Seems like we talk more about the State of Florida than our beloved State of Colorado, but Florida is back with more plans of potential book banning.

Duval County (home of the Jacksonville Jaguars) Schools are set to review over 1 million books because of three new states laws that will impact education, including race, gender and sexual orientation.

The new laws were backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in an effort to "determining if a book is developmentally appropriate for student use."

Our take:

Much like regimes burning books throughout history, banning books is just the most recent attempt to censor and silence voices from thinking for themselves. Although, some books should be read at certain ages for various of reasons, to completely ban books from students to learn history from alternative perspectives is the opposite of what our 1st amendment freedom of press right aims for.

As we continue to highlight African American representation in the book world for the month of February, we turn our attention to a cool achievement by authors George M Johnson and Leah Johnson.

It was just announced that the authors will get a 7-figure book deal from FSG Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Macmillan Children's Publishing Group.

The authors are slated to release two books starting with a romantic comedy in 2025 called, "There's Always Next Year”.

It's always an achievement for authors to receive a 7-figure deal, so congratulations to these two!!
