The witch hunt has finally found its target.

Last week, a viral tweet (probably called a "xeet" now, right?! 😆) spotlighted a debut author who was ruthlessly creating accounts and leaving negative book reviews on other debut authors' Goodreads pages so that their books could rank lower than hers. She was also targeting writers of color with her negative reviews.

This author was revealed this week as Cait Corrain.

Corrain, whose novel "Crown of Starlight" was backed by Del Rey, an imprint of Penguin Random House, was pulled from their 2024 publishing schedule.

To add to the craziness, on Tuesday, Cait apologized on Instagram and blamed her actions on her struggles with mental health and substance abuse.

Our take:

As strange as this story is, it still highlights the harmful review system Goodreads continues to allow on its platform and how diverse writers continue to see their stories affected in the book world.
